| Experimental data on oxygen uptake are considered for three species of the Black sea fishes (mullet, umbrine, Spicara sparis L.) during swimming in a hydrodynamic tube at 15 and 20 deg.C. It is shown that when swimming cruising speed is 40-80 cm/s energy expenditures for active metabolism are 3-4 times as high as the intensity of basic metabolism and approximately proportional to the speed square. |

| The intensity of nitrogen excretion is determined in Cephalopoda (octopuses, squids), Crustacea (isopods, euphausiids), Tunicata subphylum (salps) and fish fry. The measuring were carried out at a natural summer temperature of the animals existence. The excretion levels are expressed by the quantitative exponential equations. It is shown that the highest nitrogen excretion is in Cephalopoda and the least one in salps. Differences of the body composition of investigated species of animals are analysed; the relation is discussed between the excretion levels, mobility and composition of the body. |

| The article deals with general results of researches performed by workers of the A. O. Kovalevskij Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas of the Ukrainian SSR Academy of Sciences in the Black and Mediterranean seas and in the Atlantic ocean for 1971-1975. These results are shown to be for developing theoretical ideas of structure, functioning and processes of biological production in sea ecosystems, for elaborating principles for protecting the sea environment and bio-resources from pollution as well as for solution of certain technical problems connected with making use of underwater environment. |

| Values of free nitrogen assimilation by microflora are determined by direct measuring Sevastopol Bay, the Danube and Bosporus regions and they amount to about 1.1, 0.9 and 0.6 mg of N per day, respectively. The portion of photoautotrophic and dark heterophic fixation of nitrogen in the total process of its assimilation is investigated. Possible values of the created protein mass are calculated. |

| On the basis of studies of the own data and those from literature on trematodes from the Monorchis Looss, 1902 genus, the M. parvus Looss, 1902 species is considered as a synonym to M. monorchis (Stossich, 1890) Looss, 1902. M. monorchis from the Black sea fishes Spicara smaris and Diplodus annularis is rediscribed in details. The Achoerus Vlassenko, 1931 genus is transferred to the Metadena Linton, 1910 genus. A detailed description is presented for Metadena pauli (Vlass., 1931) comb. nov. from Sciena umbra, Umbrina cirrhosa and Mesogobius batrachocephalus caught in the region of the Sevastopol bays. |

| On the basis of the found regularities of changes in specific weight and passive submersion velocity during decay of plankters in the Black sea and tropical Atlantic as well as on the basis of the destruction rate dependence on water temperature, the mathematical model of died copepod submersion is constructed taking into account the real water stratification in these regions. Sea depths within which there occurs plankton decay are calculated. |

| The paper deals with peculiarities of lipid metabolism in the liver and muscles of the Black sea fishes: bottom inactive Scorpaena porcus L. and pelagic quickly swimming Spicara smaris L. in the prespawning and prewinter periods of the year cycle. The character of metabolic processes was judged from radiocarbon (14C) accumulation and excretion by the fish tissue lipids after a single intraperitoneal injection of I-14C-acetate. Seasonal differences in the character of lipid metabolism are found only in those tissue where accumulation of reserve lipids does not occur (Scorpaens porcus L. muscles and Spicara smaris L. liver). | Results of the quantitative processing of 530 bathymetric samples are analysed. The sampling was performed in summer, autumn and winter seasons at 70 stations arranged over the whole water area of the Red Sea and adjacent part of the Gulf of Aden. Average of the phytoplankton amount and biomass are presented for the mentioned seasons in the northern, central and southern parts of the sea with subdivision into the main taxonomic groups at different depths from 0 to 500-1000 m. Peculiarities of the phytoplankton distribution are considered interrelated with the hydrological structure of water masses. |

| The article deals with the results of parallel studies of water transparency and phytoplankton amount in different water layers performed at some stations in the spring of 1972. A close correlation (coefficient 0.764) is found between plankton concentration and the index of the directed light weakening in water at lambda = 442 nm. Simultaneously the dependence of these parameters distribution on the hydrological structure of waters, in particular, density stratification is shown. |

| Intensity of total, basic and active metabolism, mobility and swimming speed of the Diplodus annularis L. fry, the mass being 0.340 - 8.460 g, were studied on the basis of natural fish activity. Coming from the obtained results the Diplodus annularis L. fry belongs to the fish with a moderate level of energy metabolism. In spite of high mobility and maneuverability, Diplodus annularis L. fry possesses mediocre swimming abilities and cannot move for a long time without breaks. |
